Bringing together informed analysis from leading experts drawn from across the G20 and beyond, this publication is the culmination of a collaborative effort by the Australian Institute of International Affairs to promote public understanding of the G20.

The idea behind this publication is to provide a point of reference for those wishing to develop a deeper understanding of the G20 and the Brisbane Summit to be held in November. It aims to give readers a thorough and panoramic view of the G20 – its evolution, current agenda and likely future – from a range of international perspectives. The diversity of contributions is a testament to the G20’s significance as a forum for dialogue and policy coordination.

Inside, you’ll find information about host country Australia and the state of Queensland. From the Great Barrier Reef to the Great South East, Queensland is a place of diversity and change. Its capital Brisbane is a vibrant and emerging world city.

You’ll then find Setting The Scene, an outline of the evolution of the G20 and its work program. Professor Andrew Cooper analyses the structural evolution of the G20 while Dr Ren Xiao considers China’s role in global governance. President of the World Bank Group Dr Jim Yong Kim identifies inclusive growth as the key challenge for the G20 in the years to come.

Some of the key players in Australia’s hosting year, including G20 Sherpa Heather Smith, Chair of the C20 Steering Committee Tim Costello and Chair of the Y20 Planning Group Holly Ransom give their perspectives.

The next section, titled Issues and Analysis, addresses the ten key topics which have been identified as priorities for Australia’s presidency of the G20. Informed commentary is provided by a range of Australian and international experts including from trade and industry (Austrade, the Australian Industry Group and Grant Thornton), think tanks (Chatham House, CIGI and the Lowy Institute), academia (Australian National University and Griffith University) and the non-profit sector (Transparency International).

A section called Business Voices includes interviews with Minister for Trade and Investment the Hon Andrew Robb MP and the head of the B20, Richard Goyder, as well as a focus on global health and on agribusiness.

The following chapter, International Voices, offers analysis of the G20’s current priorities and the prospects for Australia’s presidency from the point of view of each G20 member.

Finally, in Future of the G20, experts offer their opinions on the evolution of the G20 as an emerging institution of global governance. Pieces by World Bank Managing Directors Sri Mulyani Indrawati and Bertrand Badré and leading experts John Kirton, Ramesh Thakur, He Weiwen and Simon Tay each illuminate different issues for the future of the G20.
