The Afghanistan Taliban leader Mullah Omar was confirmed dead by Afghan intelligence and security sources. The death of Mullah Omar has likely caused a split prompting a succession crisis within the Taliban.

United States President Obama conducted a state visit to Ethiopia and Kenya. President Obama focused human rights, democratic progress, regional security and anti-corruption efforts.

The Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Rezek continued to face calls to resign after a scandal involving 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Berhad). PM Rezek has already sacked 5 ministers including the Deputy PM and his Attorney General.

Turkey has began to attack Daesh Positions in Northern Syria following a Daesh bombing in Turkey. The attacks by the Turkish Air force also attack Kurdish positions in the area, likely ending a two year ceasefire between Turkey and Kurdish independence groups.

Egypt has delayed the decision of a retrial of three Al-Jazeera journalists who are accused to supporting the Muslim Brotherhood. One of the Journalists was Australian Peter Greste who was deported in February.

Russia has vetoed an international tribunal into the downing of MH17 in Ukraine last year. Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop stated that the “veto only compounds the atrocity”.

The United Kingdom and France have pledged to improve cooperation in their efforts to control migration in Calais. The move comes after 2000 migrants attempted to use the Channel Tunnel to reach the United Kingdom leading to the death of one man.

A Flaperon thought to belong to MH370 was discovered on a beach in the French island Réunion near Madagascar. While the part matches a Boeing 777, it may take up to a week to ascertain if the piece came from MH370.

A report by Amnesty International on alleged atrocities in Rafah during last year’s conflict with Hamas claims Israeli forces killed at least 135 Palestinian civilians, including 75 children.

Former high-ranking Chinese army figure Guo Boxiong has been expelled from the Communist Party in a corruption probe. Gen Guo is accused of using his influence to seek promotions for others and of accepting bribes.

Greece’s state prosecutors have set their sights on former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis who faces possible criminal charges over plans to set up a parallel payments system inside the monetary union.

A Visit by the Saudi King Salman to the French Riviera has closed a local beach and ignited a 100,000 signature petition. The King is visiting the Riviera with an entourage of around 1000 people.
