The politics of self-interest bind India and China together

Published 16 Jan 2014

The recent blog post, ‘The politics of self-interest bind India and China together’, by AIIA National Director Melissa Conley Tyler and AIIA Research Intern Aakriti Bachhawat, argues that while the relationship between India and China is usually characterised by competition and tension, there is also a lot of potential for cooperation and economic co-development. The Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) economic corridor is a good example of an initiative that has increased trade between the four countries. Both China and India have a mutual interest in building closer links within the region and it is in their self-interest to recognize the benefits of greater economic cooperation to both sides and act on initiatives that will enhance prosperity in the region which could, in turn, ameliorate tensions and strengthen relations between the two countries.
