The Australian Institute of International Affairs is pleased to announce the recipients for the 2019 Euan Crone Asian Awareness Scholarship, Ellen Brookes and Kobra Moradi.

The scholarship was established in 2013 by the late Euan Crone, a long-term member of the Australian Institute of International Affairs Victoria. It provides grants of up to $5,000 for young students or recent graduates, who are members of the AIIA, to undertake travel, work or study in Asia. This scholarship highlights the commitment to deepening knowledge and understanding of Asia in the Australian community.

Ellen Brookes, from Murdoch University, is completing her Doctoral thesis on the role of non-governmental actors as influencers or providers of security, and the changing dynamics of security policy. She will use her scholarship to complete semi-structured interviews and archival research in Japan and South Korea. Ellen is a member of AIIA for WA.

Kobra Moradi, from La Trobe University, recently completed a double degree in Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of International Relations. She also accomplished an Honours thesis in law, assessing impartial situation and case selection at the International Criminal Court. Kobra will use her scholarship to fund an internship with the Office of the International Co-Prosecutor at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia. Kobra has an interest in human rights, international law and public interest law.

Kobra says, “as a girl and an immigrant, I know exactly what it means to be dehumanised, marginalised and underrepresented. But, I also know that the status quo can be challenged, changed and improved. Law can play a critical role in this regard… I want my work to be meaningful and have a positive impact.” Kobra is a member of the Australian Institute of International Affairs Victoria.

Applications for 2020 are now open and will close on Friday 28 August 2020.
