Borders and Margins in International Affairs
In July 2018, the IPSA World Congress in Brisbane set the theme of borders and margins in a multi-dimensional context to discuss how ideas are constructed to include and exclude.
Boundaries are not simply geographical, but also liminal and non-geographical in terms of identity and the conceptions and progress of democracy.
With the rapid evolution of information technologies, there is an emerging trend among scholars to re-conceptualise borders and margins in the digital age. Some insights from the IPSA World Congress include the use of visual images of protest from the perspective of deliberative democracy and the impact of online platforms on political participation.
Melissa Conley Tyler, the National Executive Director of the Australian Institute of International Affairs, spoke with Professor Katharine Gelber at the IPSA World Congress 2018 in Brisbane.
Katharine Gelber is Professor of Politics and Public Policy at the University of Queensland and Chair of the Local Organising Committee for the July 2018 World Congress of the International Political Science Association in Brisbane.
