Civilisational dialogues are crucial in a period of power transition and civilisational shift.

In a period of profound transition, we need to have a global picture, a sense of historical development and an interdisciplinary approach to international relations. There also needs to be inclusivity to involve non-western approaches in civilisational dialogues.

In Australia, the political class continues to use the slogans of several decades ago, seemingly unaware of seismic changes, not least in our neighbourhood. Australia will need to develop a truly independent framework of analysis – not one that is borrowed from major centres of power – to respond creatively. Three areas will be critical: the media, the education system and community engagement.

Joseph A. Camilleri OAM is Emeritus Professor at La Trobe University and was the founding director of La Trobe’s Centre for Dialogue. He was a speaker at the IPSA World Congress 2018 on “Islam and Christianity Searching for Relevance in an Age of Globalised Insecurity.”
