The high consumption of energy is a key challenge presented by the emergence of  Cryptocurrency. Another issue is that of governance, with regulation by governments and banks proving difficult. Nevertheless, Cryptocurrency may help address the public distrust of mainstream financial institutions.

Dr Kym Brown is a Senior Lecturer at Monash University in the Department of Banking and Finance.
