This episode looks at Malcolm Turnbull’s “China reset” speech, Australia’s Soft Power Review and the political development in Malaysia and Indonesia.

In the third episode of the Australia in the World podcast, AIIA National President Allan Gyngell and ANU academic Darren Lim discuss the efforts of Prime Minister (at the time of recording) Malcolm Turnbull to “reset” bilateral relations with China in a recent speech. They discuss Australia’s soft power in light of a review announced by Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop. They then welcome their first guest, former Australian diplomat Miles Kupa, to discuss political development in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Miles Kupa is a past vice-president of AIIA ACT and former Australian diplomat. He was Australia’s Ambassador to Thailand and the Philippines, High Commissioner in Malaysia and Singapore and Deputy Head of Mission in Jakarta, as well as Chief of Staff to foreign minister Gareth Evans and Deputy Secretary in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Allan Gyngell AO FAIIA is National President of the Australian Institute of International Affairs and an Honorary Professor at the ANU’s College of Asia and the Pacific.

Dr Darren Lim is a Lecturer in the School of Politics and International Relations at the Australian National University.
