Rethinking Australia's National Security Policy
Katherine Gordon from the AIIA ACT Branch interviews Professor Rory Medcalf, Head of the National Security College, ANU, about the the need to rethink Australia’s national security policy, the gap between Australia’s interests and its capabilities in the region and the importance of public participation in formulating Australian security policy.
In an interconnected world, Australia’s security interests will continue to expand faster than its capabilities. Emerging challenges will join enduring ones on a crowded horizon of risk. Australia’s strategic lifelines will be caught up in a changing Indo-Pacific region, while terrorism and extremism will pose enduring risks to a society built on trust and tolerance. The Head of the National Security College at the ANU, Professor Rory Medcalf offers some assessments and policy observations about the need to respond with a more inclusive approach to Australia’s security.
