Appointment of editors, Australia in World Affairs - Calls for Expressions of Interest

Published 15 Nov 2016

The Research Committee of the Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) is calling for expressions of interest from members of the academic community to take the editorial role on a prestigious AIIA publication: Australia in World Affairs (AIWA).

The Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) is an independent, non-profit organisation seeking to promote interest in and understanding of international affairs in Australia. The AIIA was formed in 1924 and established as a federal body in 1933 and is the only nation-wide organisation of its kind in Australia. The Institute arranges programs of lectures, seminars, workshops, conferences and other discussions, and sponsors research and publications.

The AIIA has published AIWA to document Australia’s foreign policy and examine Australia’s role in the world since 1950. It is currently published through Oxford University Press. Each volume captures the key characteristics, policy decisions and activities of the Australian government and its diplomatic staff during the past five years. There are chapters examining Australia’s major bilateral relationships and central questions such as trade and security. There is also coverage of emerging or developing issues.

For the past 20 years, AIWA has been edited by James Cotton (Professor, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Australian Defence Force Academy) and John Ravenhill (Professor, Head, School of Politics and International Relations, Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University). The most recent editors are Mark Beeson (Professor, Political Science and International Relations, University of Western Australia) and Shahar Hameiri (Associate Professor and Associate Director of the Graduate Centre in Governance and International Affairs, University of Queensland). The next volume will cover the 2016-2020 period and be published in 2021.

The AIIA seeks one or more editors for this prestigious role. A position description is attached. Editors will be given full authority and responsibility to commission and edit manuscripts. The AIIA will support editors through funding or workshops for contributors and administrative support. The agreement between the AIIA and the new editors would be for or one volume and could then be renewed if desired.

Expressions of interest should include a Curriculum Vitae of proposed editors and statement of institutional support. Applicants should submit their expressions of interest to AIIA National Office on ceo@20.185.176.227. A full description of the position can be found here: Australia In World Affairs – Appointment of Editors

Expressions of interest are due on 28 February 2017. The choice of successful candidates will be made by mid-2017.
