Where Goes the Alliance after Trump?
The Hon Kim Beazley, Australian Ambassador to the United States from 2010 until January 2016, shares his views on the upcoming US election, tensions within the Republican party, and the wider implications of the election on US foreign policy.
This year’s presidential contest between Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton is expected to be the “most harshly fought” in years. Mr Beazley will draw on his wide experience to shed light on how the vagaries of the US Electoral College system have allowed Donald Trump to become the presumptive Republican nominee amongst all expectations. Moreover, he will discuss the long-term consequences of Mr Trump’s run within the context of global political order and liberal democracy.
The Hon Kim Beazley AC FAIIA was Australian Ambassador to the United States from 2010 until January 2016, and is a former leader of the Australian Labor Party. Mr Beazley is now the national president of the Australian Institute of International Affairs, a senior fellow at the Perth USAsia Centre and has previously served as Minister for Defence as well as Deputy Prime Minister of Australia.
